Broken Canon Speedlite 580EX

My first casualty of the season. When you do professional photography, things like this can inevitably happen. In this case, a stray basketball knocked my Canon Speedlite 580EX clean off my Canon EOS 50D. The foot mount broke sending the flash across the floor and two pieces of the foot mount stuck in the hot shoe of the camera which were removed as this video shows. Fortunately the camera and lens survived and I have a Canon Speedlite 580EX II as a backup. This damage is also repairable by Canon service. With it’s metal shoe, could the 580EX II survived? Well, bear in mind that although the shoe is metal, it is still plastic that holds it in place.

They are made to break like that. Its better than the flash ripping your hotshoe off the camera body. Good luck with the repairs!

i like the 50d

I hope he knows he can still use it as a slave…

word….

das ist Miiiiiiis

so you make a video of it? lol

Better to have the shoe break off the bottom of the flash than have a solid flash rip the shoe off the top of the camera though, surely? :-)

on the new 580ex II there are a metal plate in the socket .

great flasch ihave it

omg That’s alot of money

how did it happen ?

NnnnnnnnOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooo……..

Canon’s pretty cheap to make a flash with a plastic shoe. I wouldn’t buy a flash for a Canon unless, I could get the 580EX II.

shit, i had that happen to my flash
but a snowboarder hit it

$130. CPS members get a discount according to membership level. 20% for silver 30% for gold and 60% platinum.

gaffer tape ???

omg, I would have vomited and been sick for a week. I hope your coping well. How much is the repair ??

Yes. It is more powerful, offers more control, and the swivel head makes a huge difference. Bouncing the flash is almost a must for professional work.

Thats is cheap to exchange!
you should be happy that you
not have the 580EX II….

ouch!!!!….i would die if this happened …..

do a flashgun really make alot of difference

Oh man I feel your pain! I was photographing Kim Wilde at Retrofest in Scotland and dropped my 5d with 430ex - damage was exactly the same. I couldn’t even gaffer tape it as a temporary repair!
I saw the same happen to another photographer, but he had the metal shoes - it actually caused MORE(expensive) damage because it ripped the bottom of the flash off.

I’ve had the 50D for several weeks now. It seems pretty reliable. A decent speed, with high resolution at a compact and affordable body. I have only seen the error 99 message once so far. But a battery reinstallation cleared it. I use it alongside my 1D Mark III.

a little off topic, but…

How are you liking the 50d?
Have you experienced any error 99 messages?
