Don’t bother with cables or special software!

The easiest and best method to download photos and video from your camera to your computer is via a little USB card reader (which are quite cheap these days).

Card readers also work for moving photos from the computer onto a card.

Plug the reader into a USB port and insert the memory card.
It will show up as a drive, and you can simply drag and drop the photos across to the folder of your choice.

Is your camera turned on and set to playback mode?

If necessary, try this: connect the camera and turn it on. Then Restart the Mac.

If this fails, try using an external card reader.

Ideally, iPhoto will open automatically and offer to import and save these files as soon as the camera is connected.

You don’t even need to load or use the Canon software to use iPhoto.

BTW, be sure NOT to let iPhoto erase those images once they’re downloaded. Erasing and reformatting a card should ALWAYS be done in the camera, NOT by the computer.
